Today
I’m reviewing Knit Mitts: Your Handy Guide to Knitting Mittens &
Gloves by Kate Atherley. (Read on to see how you can win your own copy!)
It goes way beyond just patterns (for
both mitts and gloves), it gives you a complete guide to everything you need to
know to make mittens and gloves that fit perfectly and keep you warm.
From
reading her other book, Custom Socks
I know that Kate’s style is meticulous
and conscientious, with great attention to detail. This book is no different.
She
discusses fit in great detail, providing a survey of measurements that she has collected
(for a range of children’s and adult sizes), and describing how to use and
adapt them. She explains how a proper fit is important to making sure the mittens
keep you warm.
Kate
includes a discussion of working in the round. She talks about choosing yarns; wool, mohair, possum, and cashmere, are all
recommended. Acrylic yarn is not.
She
suggests using a lining, both for extra warmth, and also to help those who
might be allergic to wool. This is a brilliant idea!
Also
included are discussions of swatching,
double stranded knitting, and felted
mittens. Kate is super thorough, and
includes tips and information on gauge, needles (DPNs and circular needles), casting
on, working in the round, blocking, and finishing.
I got as far as page 20 before I just had to jump ahead to look at the
patterns that are in the last section.
Many
of the patterns are written for different gauges which is awesome. Therefore
you can use any yarn that you want to. Information
on various customizations is there too.
Her other patterns, which include colorwork and other fun
techniques, are all enticing and charming. I really am now dying to make a pair
of mittens, seriously.
I
think you will enjoy this book as much as I did.
Thanks
to Interweave Press, I'm able to offer a giveaway of a copy of this book to one

ReplyDeleteHi, Brenda: Thank you for doing this give-away. I'm very interested in learning to make knitted gloves. I've been intimidated by them, which means it's something I'll enjoy conquering (even if there is some adult language along the way!).
ReplyDeleteForgot to mention my Rav ID: Potchke.
DeleteThanks for another awesome book review and opportunity to win a copy! They are all gorgeous mittens but I would probably make make the mittens with the fold-back flap first! Rav ID: knittylucia

ReplyDeleteLiving in a cold climate, I am always knitting mittens for myself and friends, as well as for charity. Having new patterns that are different and interesting is a goal because they don't get boring!
ReplyDeleteThe Hannett Mittens are my favorite. I'm pluggomala on Ravelry :)
ReplyDeleteLove the hannett mttens sumac on rav
ReplyDeleteWith Kate’s background in mathematics, she always crunches those uncomfy knitting numbers so I don’t have to. It’s so nice to knit in such bliss.
ReplyDeletePlus, being both Canadians, we know how important mittens are— and since we have to wear them for such a long season, then they better look fabulous and keep us happy through the winter. The more cables, the better! So give me The Hannet Mittens any day.

I like the flexibility of customizations and that most patterns are written for different gauges.
ReplyDeleteThere are quite a few patterns that I am drawn to but if I have to choose a favorite pattern then it would be Forsyte, based on what I would knit first. My gmail id is juzme9889 and am a current newsletter subscriber.
